What is Airsoft?
Airsoft in the Netherlands – Rules, equipment and everything you need to know
Airsoft in the Netherlands is a realistic, tactical shooting sport in which players battle each other with replicas of real firearms. These airsoft replicas – also known as AEGs or GBBs – shoot small, biodegradable pellets (BBs) using air pressure or gas. The sport is known for its combination of teamwork, strategy, adrenaline and fair gameplay.
In this guide, you will learn everything about playing airsoft in the United Kingdom, how it is regulated by law, what equipment you need, and what you must do to participate legally. Ideal for beginners and advanced players alike.
Where does airsoft come from?
Airsoft originated in Japan in the 1970s, where strict gun laws prohibit the possession of real firearms. In order to be able to train, the Japanese developed accurate replicas of weapons that fired safe pellets. Airsoft has since grown into a popular sport worldwide, with large communities in the US, UK, Germany and the Netherlands, among other countries.
Airsoft in the Netherlands: legislation & rules
Airsoft has been officially permitted in the Netherlands since 15 January 2013. Since then, it has been mandatory to be a member of the NABV (Dutch Airsoft Interest Group) if you:
- Want to buy or own a replica
- Want to participate in skirmishes or milsim events
- Want to transport or display airsoft replicas
According to the Weapons and Ammunition Act (WWM), an airsoft replica falls under category I. This means that possession without NABV membership is punishable and can result in fines or prosecution.
How do you register with the NABV?
Registration with the NABV is done via an online process. Among other things, you will need a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG). Once approved, you will receive a membership card that allows you to legally:
- Purchase airsoft replicas
- Participate in NABV-approved events
- Transport your replicas within the United Kingdom, from home to events or from home to shops and back again. It is therefore not permitted to take them to a friend to show them what you have bought.
How does airsoft work?
During an airsoft game, teams try to eliminate each other with biodegradable BBs. Replicas work on air pressure, gas or spring pressure and often look very realistic. Unique to airsoft is the honour system: players indicate when they have been hit and temporarily leave the playing field. This makes airsoft a so-called “gentleman's sport”.
There are various game types, including:
- CQB (Close Quarters Battle): short battles in buildings or halls
- Milsim (Military Simulation): realistic missions with rules and team structures
- Speedsoft: fast-paced indoor action with lots of movement and short rounds
- Open events: Any NABV member can sign up for a day of airsoft
- IAPS: Shooting course
