What is Airsoft?
What is Airsoft? – Everything you need to know about this tactical sport
Airsoft is a dynamic, realistic shooting sport in which players battle each other with replicas of real firearms. These replicas – called Airsoft Guns or AEGs – shoot small biodegradable pellets (BBs) using air pressure. Airsoft combines action, teamwork and strategy and is played worldwide by sports enthusiasts, tactical professionals and hobbyists.
At Airsoft Legends, you will not only find an extensive range of airsoft clothing, tactical gear, accessories and upgrade parts, but also all the information you need to start playing airsoft responsibly and legally in the United Kingdom.
Where does airsoft come from?
Airsoft originated in Japan in the 1970s, when strict gun laws made it virtually impossible to own real firearms. In order to still be able to train and shoot, the Japanese developed accurate replicas that fired safe, lightweight pellets.
In the decades that followed, the sport spread around the world. Airsoft became a popular and serious tactical sport, especially in the United States, the United Kingdom and large parts of Europe.
Airsoft in the Netherlands – since when is it legal?
Airsoft has been officially permitted in the Netherlands since 15 January 2013. From that moment on, it became possible to become a member of the NABV (Dutch Airsoft Interest Group). This membership is required by law if you want to buy, own or use an airsoft replica.
Airsoft falls under the Dutch Weapons and Ammunition Act (WWM), in which an airsoft replica is considered a category I weapon. Its possession is therefore strictly regulated. If you do not comply with the rules, possession of a replica can be classified as illegal possession of a weapon – comparable to the possession of a real firearm. Violations can result in heavy fines and criminal prosecution.
How does registration with the NABV work?
If you want to play airsoft in the Netherlands, you must always start by registering with the NABV. During this process, you will be asked to provide some personal details and you will be screened for any criminal record. You must also apply for a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG).
Only when your VOG has been approved and you have no criminal record that prevents you from becoming a member will you be accepted as an official member. You will then receive a NABV pass that allows you to purchase and transport airsoft replicas.
Playing fields in the Netherlands are always recognised by the NABV. Many locations work together with airsoft clubs or commercial organisations that organise events. Once you are a member, you can easily register online for skirmishes, milsims or training days. Most playing fields have a clear schedule and house rules.
How does airsoft work?
During an airsoft match, teams try to eliminate each other by hitting each other with biodegradable pellets (BBs). These are fired from realistic-looking replicas using air pressure or gas. Airsoft is a fair sport: players indicate when they have been hit and then temporarily leave the playing field. Airsoft is therefore also known as a gentleman's game.
There are different game formats: from short CQB (Close Quarters Battle) scenarios in buildings to large-scale milsim events in which realistic missions last for days.
What do you need to play airsoft?
A good basic kit consists of:
- Airsoft replicaThink of an electric AEG, a gas pistol or a sniper rifle.
- Biodegradable BBs6mm pellets that are fully compostable and do not harm the environment.
- ProtectionSafety goggles or a mask are mandatory.
- Batteries and gasDepending on the type of replica.

Why choose airsoft?
Airsoft is a sport that offers unique advantages. It is a way to be active, both physically and mentally, with a focus on strategy and cooperation. The realistic experience, with replicas that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing, makes every skirmish exciting. In addition, the community is predominantly sporting and close-knit: fair play and mutual respect are of paramount importance. Whether you participate in short indoor games or multi-day events in a wooded area, airsoft always gives you a combination of adrenaline, challenge and camaraderie.
Frequently asked questions about airsoft
Is airsoft dangerous?
Not if you follow the safety rules and always wear eye protection.
What is the difference between airsoft and paintball?
Airsoft uses biodegradable BBs instead of paintballs. The experience is more realistic.
How old do you have to be?
Minimum age is 18.
Can I keep a replica at home?
Yes, if you are a member of the NABV and you store the replica safely.
What happens if I own a replica without a licence?
You risk criminal prosecution and the replica will be considered illegal possession of a weapon.
What is milsim?
Milsim stands for Military Simulation. These are events in which players re-enact realistic military scenarios. Milsims often last a whole day or even several days. You work together in teams, follow missions, use map and navigation skills and play with strict rules regarding respawn, communication and equipment. Low-cap, real-cap or mid-cap magazines are often mandatory.
What is speedsoft?
Speedsoft is a faster, more athletic version of airsoft. It involves short rounds, lots of movement and aggressive play in small indoor fields. Players often use lighter replicas and minimalist equipment to be as fast and agile as possible. You could compare it to paintball with airsoft replicas.
What is an open skirmish?
An open skirmish is an airsoft game day where anyone can register individually. Unlike private events or milsims, open skirmishes are open to players of all levels. You usually don't need to have a team; the organisers divide the participants into groups.
What does CQB mean?
CQB stands for Close Quarters Battle. These are scenarios that take place in confined spaces, such as buildings, corridors and rooms. The emphasis is on quick reflexes, accurate shots and tactical movement over short distances. Indoor locations are always CQB locations.
What is IAPS?
IAPS stands for International Airsoft Practical Shooting. This is a discipline in which speed and precision are key. Players complete courses with obstacles and targets, similar to IPSC in shooting sports. The aim is not to eliminate opponents, but to hit targets as quickly as possible with as few mistakes as possible.
