Ammo Pouches

Anyone looking to buy ammo pouches will soon discover that a magazine pouch does much more than simply store magazines. A good ammo pouch determines how quickly you can reload, how securely your magazines stay in place, and how much freedom of movement you retain during a skirmish or tactical training session. Whether you’re putting together a compact CQB loadout or building an extensive milsim setup, the right magazine pouches ensure your kit is organised logically and that essential magazines are always within easy reach.

Within this category, you’ll find a wide range of single, double and triple ammo pouches, as well as open-top, covered and double-stack magazine pouches. There are also models suitable for M4 / STANAG 5.56 magazines, AK 7.62 and 5.45 magazines, pistol magazines and even drum magazines. Thanks to the modular MOLLE/PALS system, you can easily create a configuration that perfectly suits your replica, playing style and personal preference.

MOLLE or PALS? What exactly is the difference?

The terms MOLLE and PALS are often used interchangeably, but technically speaking there is an important difference. MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is the complete modular carrying system, whilst PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) refers to the horizontal webbing to which magazine pouches and other pouches are attached.

Type Ammo PouchCapacityBest use
Single Ammo Pouch1 warehouseCQB, speedsoft and light loadouts
Double Ammo Pouch2 warehousesAll-round airsoft and outdoor activities
Triple Ammo Pouch3 warehousesMilsim and larger loadouts
Open Top / Fast DrawQuick accessCQB and dynamic skirmishes
Covered Ammo PouchExtra protectionOutdoor, milsim and bad weather
Double Stack PouchMultiple warehouses at a single locationMaximum warehouse capacity

In practice, almost everyone refers to them as MOLLE ammo pouches. That is why we also use this term on this page, even though, technically speaking, they are attached using PALS webbing.

Which ammo pouch suits your playing style?

Not every player needs the same magazine capacity. The ideal configuration depends on the type of replica, the duration of a skirmish and your personal playing style.

  • Single-round ammunition pouches: Compact, lightweight and ideal when speed is more important than maximum capacity.
  • Double ammo pouches: They offer an excellent balance between storage space and freedom of movement, making them a popular choice amongst most airsoft players.
  • Triple ammo pouches: Suitable for players who undertake longer missions or wish to carry more spare magazines.
  • Open-top ammo pouches / Fast Mag Pouch: Designed for quick reloads thanks to elastic retention or internal inserts.
  • Covered ammunition pouches: Provide better protection for magazines against mud, rain and dust thanks to a closable flap.
  • Double-stack pouches: Ideal if you want to carry lots of magazines without taking up extra MOLLE space.

It is also important to take into account the type of warehouse you use.

Always check that the magazine holder you have chosen is suitable for your specific type of magazine. Although many modern pouches offer a degree of adjustability, the dimensions of M4, AK and pistol magazines vary considerably.

When choosing an ammo pouch, bear in mind the following, amongst other things:

  • Single, double or triple capacity to suit your playing style.
  • Open-top or covered version depending on the desired speed and level of protection.
  • Compatibility with your warehouse type.
  • Traditional MOLLE or Laser-Cut MOLLE.
  • Materials and build quality suitable for intensive use.

For most airsoft players, a combination of single or double open-top ammo pouches provides the ideal setup. These offer sufficient magazine capacity without taking up too much space and allow for quick reloads during both CQB and outdoor skirmishes.

In practice, you’ll see that many experienced players continue to tweak their set-up throughout the season. After a few skirmishes, it often becomes clear which magazine pouches are actually being used and which ones are just adding extra weight. Step by step, this leads to a loadout that’s perfectly suited to their own playing style.

Open-top of covered ammo pouches?

One of the most common decisions warehouse operators have to make is whether to opt for an open-top or a covered version.

Open-top ammo pouches are designed for maximum speed. Thanks to elastic retention or internal reinforcements, magazines remain securely in place whilst being able to be drawn without any extra movements. This makes them particularly popular during CQB and other dynamic game formats where every second counts.

Covered ammo pouches feature a closable flap that offers extra protection against dirt, rain and the loss of magazines during vigorous movement. This is why many players prefer a closed system, particularly during outdoor skirmishes, in wooded areas and at multi-day milsim events.

Which design is ultimately best depends entirely on your playing style. If you’re looking for maximum speed, an open-top pouch is the obvious choice. If you prioritise protection and retention, a covered pouch is often the better option.

Materials and build quality

The quality of an ammo pouch is largely determined by the material used, the finish and the retention system. Polyester is an excellent choice for recreational use, whilst Cordura® and Mil-Spec materials are better able to withstand heavy use, abrasion and prolonged use.

An increasing number of premium ammo pouches are made using Laser Cut MOLLE, combining a lighter weight and a slimmer profile with the same expansion options as traditional MOLLE. In addition, various premium models are available in IRR versions, where the material has been treated to reduce infrared reflection. This is particularly appealing to players who wish to put together a military loadout that is as realistic as possible.

In high-quality ammo pouches, reinforced stitching and hard-wearing materials ensure that the pouch retains its shape and grip even after frequent magazine changes.

How many warehouses do you actually need?

A question that many new players ask is how many magazines you actually need during a skirmish. The answer depends on your playing style, the length of the game and the capacity of the magazines you’re using.

Playing styleRecommended configuration
CQB2 to 3 rifle magazines + 1 or 2 pistol magazines
Open Events4 to 6 rifle magazines + pistol magazines
MilsimDepending on the mission, duration and personal preference

Carrying more magazines does not automatically mean you are better prepared. Every extra pouch and every extra magazine adds weight to your kit. Many experienced players therefore deliberately opt for a configuration that allows them to carry sufficient ammunition without unnecessarily compromising their freedom of movement or comfort.

Where do you put your ammo pouches?

The positioning of the magazine holders has a major impact on the speed of reloading and ease of use during a skirmish. A logical layout ensures that magazines are intuitively accessible without having to search for them.

Ammo PouchBest positionWhy
Rifle Ammo PouchFront of plate carrier or chest rigQuick reloads with the primary replica
Pistol Magazine PouchCombat belt or alongside rifle magazinesImmediately accessible during a transition to the sidearm
AK Magazine PouchFront of the carrier with sufficient spacingAK warehouses are wider and require more space
Double Stack PouchFront of the carrier or sideMore storage capacity without taking up extra MOLLE space
Drum Magazine PouchCombat belt or utility configurationSuitable for larger and heavier warehouses

A good set-up prevents magazines from jamming or getting in the way during a reload. Particularly with wider AK magazines and drum magazines, it is advisable to take their extra dimensions and weight into account.

Which colour ammo pouch goes with your loadout?

As well as functionality, camouflage also plays an important role. The right colour matches your kit and the environment in which you’re playing.

Colour / camouflage patternMost popular for
BlackCQB, urban loadouts en law enforcement-stijl
CoyoteDry, sandy and open areas
OD GreenWooded areas and classic military loadouts
Ranger GreenModern military configurations and all-round use
Wolf GreyUrban environments and modern tactical equipment
MulticamAll-round camouflage across a variety of terrains
Camouflage patternWooded and green playing fields
EvergladeDense vegetation and green outdoor environments
AboutWoodland and maritime camouflage patterns

Matching the colour of your ammo pouches to the rest of your kit creates a uniform and professional look. Many players therefore choose to use the same camouflage pattern or colour scheme for all their pouches.

Common mistakes when choosing ammo pouches

  • Fitting more magazine pouches than are actually needed during a skirmish – Making full use of every available MOLLE slot may seem practical, but it often adds extra weight and results in a less organised setup. Many experienced players only carry the number of magazines appropriate to the duration of the skirmish or the type of mission, which keeps the loadout lighter and makes reloads quicker.
  • Opting for open-top pouches when maximum protection against dirt is a priority – Open-top ammo pouches offer lightning-fast access to magazines, but also leave them more exposed to mud, rain, sand and branches. If you mainly play outdoors or during longer milsim events, covered pouches with a closable flap may be a better choice to keep magazines clean and well protected.
  • Use covered pouches during fast-paced CQB scenarios where speed is the top priority – In close quarters, it’s all about speed. A lockable flap offers extra protection, but takes just a little longer during a reload. For players who mainly play CQB or prioritise quick magazine changes, open-top magazine pouches with elastic retention are often a more efficient solution.
  • Ignoring the difference between M4, AK and pistol magazines – Not every ammo pouch is suitable for every type of magazine. M4, AK, G36 and SMG magazines differ in size and shape, meaning the fit may vary depending on the platform. You should therefore always check that the magazine pouch you have chosen is suitable for the replica and the magazines you are using.
  • Placing heavy double-stack configurations in a single position, thereby compromising the balance of the loadout – Double-stack magazine pouches offer extra storage capacity, but also shift more weight to one side of the kit. By distributing heavy magazine pouches evenly across a plate carrier, chest rig or combat belt, the loadout remains better balanced and comfort is noticeably improved during longer skirmishes.
  • Failing to position magazine holders to suit your dominant hand, resulting in reloads taking an unnecessarily long time – An efficient reload starts with the logical placement of magazine holders. Position your ammo pouches so that you can instinctively grab a magazine without unnecessarily altering your stance. By tailoring the configuration to your dominant hand, magazine changes will be quicker, smoother and more consistent in a variety of situations.

An efficient configuration is all about speed, accessibility and balance. By thinking in advance about your playing style and the position of each ammo pouch, you can create a loadout that’s comfortable to carry and works intuitively.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ammo pouch?
An ammo pouch is a magazine holder that attaches to a plate carrier, chest rig, combat belt or tactical vest. It ensures that magazines are stored safely and are quickly accessible during a reload.

What is the difference between a single, double and triple ammo pouch?
A single ammo pouch holds one magazine, a double pouch holds two, and a triple pouch holds three magazines. Which type is best depends on your playing style and the magazine capacity you require.

Which is better: an open-top or covered ammo pouch?
Open-top ammo pouches offer the quickest access to magazines and are popular during CQB. Covered ammo pouches provide better protection for magazines against dirt, rain and loss during outdoor skirmishes and milsim.

Do AK magazines fit in an M4 ammo pouch?
Not always. AK magazines are wider and have a different shape to M4/STANAG magazines. You should therefore preferably use a pouch specifically designed for AK magazines, or check whether the magazine holder is adjustable.

What is a double-stack ammo pouch?
A double-stack pouch can hold several magazines in the same MOLLE position. This allows you to increase your magazine capacity without taking up any extra space on your plate carrier or chest rig.

How many ammo pouches do I need?
For most players, two to four rifle magazines are sufficient. During longer outdoor skirmishes or milsim events, a larger magazine capacity may be desirable, depending on the mission and the type of replica.

Are ammo pouches universal?
Many modern ammo pouches are adjustable and suitable for different types of magazines. However, always check that the pouch is compatible with your M4, AK, pistol or drum magazines.

Which brands of ammo pouches are reliable?
Brands such as 101Inc., Amomax, Condor Outdoor, Invader Gear, Tasmanian Tiger, Templar’s Gear and Warrior Assault Systems are among the best-known manufacturers in this category. They offer magazine pouches for a wide range of applications, from recreational airsoft to professional tactical use.

With the right ammunition pouches you can put together a loadout that combines speed, clarity and reliability. By choosing the right magazine pouches and distributing them logically across your plate carrier, chest rig or combat belt, you’ll always have quick access to your ammunition during any CQB skirmish, outdoor mission or multi-day milsim event.
