Specna Arms Steel Motor Gear D-Type is a hardened steel motor gear that transmits the driving force from the AEG motor to the bevel gear in the gearbox. A precisely fitted pinion gear reduces wear, minimises mechanical noise and ensures a consistent gearbox cycle, particularly during intensive use or with high-performance internal upgrades.

In every AEG, the motor gear is the first point of contact in the entire drive train. It is precisely at this point that the highest peak loads occur. If the teeth do not mesh precisely with the bevel gear, you will soon notice this in the form of a rougher noise, increased resistance during rotation and accelerated wear on both gears. That is why experienced airsoft technicians often opt straight away for a new pinion gear when overhauling a gearbox, rather than simply replacing the damaged gear from the gearbox.

The Specna Arms Steel Motor Gear D-Type is made from hardened steel and features a D-Type bore for motor shafts with a D-shaped shaft. This ensures that the gear remains securely fitted to the motor shaft without any unwanted rotation, even when the motor is running under heavy load for prolonged periods. The supplied set screw ensures a secure fit.

Why a good motor gear makes such a difference

When upgrading, many players focus on high-speed gears, a new motor or a more powerful spring, whilst the motor gear is often reused. In practice, however, it is precisely this gear that determines how efficiently the motor’s power is transferred to the gearbox.

When the teeth mesh correctly with the bevel gear, the force is distributed evenly. This results in a smoothly running geartrain, less heat build-up in the motor and a quieter gearbox. This difference remains noticeable over the long term, particularly in builds featuring an 11.1V LiPo, a high-torque motor or stiffer springs.

Performance during use

In a well-adjusted gearbox, the motor gear rotates thousands of revolutions per skirm. Any slight deviation in the gearing increases the load on the entire gear train.

With a precision-machined steel pinion gear, you’ll benefit from:

  • Hardened steel reduces wear on both the motor gear and the bevel gear, thereby extending the service life of the entire drivetrain.
  • D-Type coupling prevents twisting on compatible motor shafts and ensures stable transmission of motor torque.
  • Precise gearing ensures a quieter gearbox, more efficient power transmission and less mechanical resistance.
  • Includes an adjusting screw, enabling reliable installation during maintenance, repairs or complete gearbox upgrades.

Practical insights that are often underestimated

A common mistake is to replace only the damaged bevel gear whilst leaving the worn motor gear in place. As a result, the new gear will wear unevenly again, significantly reducing its service life.

An incorrectly adjusted engine height is also often mistakenly identified as the cause of extra gearbox noise. In reality, a worn or damaged pinion gear can cause the same symptom, even when the engine is perfectly adjusted.

Furthermore, many problems do not arise during normal semi-automatic use, but rather during long bursts of full-auto fire. At such times, the stresses on the gear train increase significantly, and it becomes clear just how important a precisely fitted steel motor gear really is.

Compatibility and loadout

This motor gear is designed for AEG motors with a D-type motor shaft and is suitable for a wide range of gearbox configurations. Whether you’re maintaining a standard M4, building a high-powered DMR, or optimising a high-speed CQB platform, a reliable pinion gear is always the foundation of an efficiently running gearbox.

When carrying out a full overhaul, it is advisable to also check the bevel gear, shims, motor bearings, motor height adjustment and, if necessary, the motor itself at the same time. Only when all components are working together correctly can you derive the full benefit of a quiet and durable drivetrain.

Who is this Motorgear suitable for?

This version is particularly of interest to players who carry out preventative maintenance on their gearbox, fit an internal upgrade or replace a worn-out motor gear. It is also a logical choice for airsoft technicians looking to build a reliable geartrain.

If you have a standard replica that works perfectly and the existing engine gear shows no signs of wear, replacing it will, in itself, yield little additional performance gain. In that case, maintenance is more important than upgrading.

Common mistakes

A pinion gear is often fitted without readjusting the motor height. As a result, even a perfectly manufactured gear can produce an unnecessarily high level of noise and wear out more quickly.

In addition, people sometimes try to fit a D-type gear onto a motor with a different shaft profile. You should therefore always check which type of motor shaft your AEG motor uses before installing a new motor gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this motor gear fit any AEG motor?
No. This version is designed for motors with a D-type motor shaft. Always check the type of motor shaft before ordering the motor gear.

Does this engine gearbox affect the performance of my replica?
Indirectly, yes. A precise gear ratio reduces resistance and wear, allowing the gearbox to run more efficiently and consistently.

When should I replace a motor gear?
If there is visible wear on the teeth, damage, excessive gearbox noise, or when you are carrying out a complete gearbox overhaul.

Can I replace just the motor gear without the bevel gear?
Yes, you can, but if both gears show signs of wear, replacing them at the same time is usually the best option to ensure the teeth remain evenly meshed.

Which parts is it advisable to replace at the same time?
During a gearbox overhaul, the bevel gear, shims, bearings, motor alignment and, if necessary, the motor or the complete gearset are often checked or replaced.

Do you want to build a reliable powertrain for your replica, or replace a worn pinion gear? With the Specna Arms Steel Motor Gear D-Type, you’re choosing a precise and durable foundation on which the rest of your gearbox can function optimally.
