Specna Arms Aluminium Double-Sealed CNC Piston Head Bearing is a CNC-machined piston head for AEG gearboxes that maximises the air seal thanks to a double O-ring seal and an integrated ball bearing. This ensures that compression remains more consistent during each firing cycle, reducing FPS fluctuations and allowing the gearbox to operate more efficiently.

With many standard piston heads, some of the compressed air is lost unnoticed around the seal. You don’t always notice this immediately in the FPS reading, but you will notice it in less consistent shot build-up and a replica that reacts slightly differently with each shot. This CNC version has been developed for players who, during maintenance or a gearbox upgrade, want to optimise the entire compression section and leave no weak links.

Why do you notice a difference in practice?

A good airseal isn’t just about a higher FPS, but above all about predictability. When the piston head seals the cylinder identically every cycle, the amount of air behind each BB remains much more consistent. Particularly with replicas that have been finely tuned with a good hop-up and a precision barrel, this translates into a more stable shot pattern.

The integrated ball bearing also has a function that is often underestimated. When the main spring is compressed, torsion is generated as the coils come under tension. Thanks to the bearing, the spring can rotate freely, thereby reducing that tension. This reduces unnecessary strain on the spring and ensures that compression is smoother, particularly with stiffer springs or replicas that undergo a high number of firing cycles.

One practical detail that many competitors rarely mention is that a poor air seal is often wrongly attributed to the nozzle or cylinder head. In reality, the piston head is frequently the main source of internal air leakage. By replacing this particular component, unexplained differences in FPS often disappear without the need for further adjustments.

CNC-machined aluminium for a precise fit

As the piston head is made from CNC-machined aluminium, the tolerances are more precise than those of many standard cast versions. As a result, the double O-ring seals more evenly against the cylinder wall, which improves compression.

That does not, however, automatically mean that aluminium is always better. In extremely high-speed builds, some technicians deliberately opt for lighter polymer piston heads to minimise moving mass. For most standard, high-torque and DMR configurations, this aluminium version actually offers an excellent combination of stability, durability and compression.

Optimal collaboration within the compression department

You’ll achieve the greatest performance gains when the entire compression system is properly matched. This piston head therefore performs at its best when combined with a high-quality cylinder head, a well-fitting nozzle and a reinforced piston. Only when all the components fit together correctly will you benefit from a virtually sealed air system.

Another point that is often overlooked is lubrication. Too much grease around the O-rings actually increases resistance and attracts dirt, whereas a thin layer of suitable silicone grease allows the seal to function optimally without adversely affecting compression.

Suitable for various AEG builds

Whether you’re overhauling a standard Version 2 or Version 3 gearbox or putting together a complete performance build, a reliable piston head forms the basis of stable compression.

For CQB builds, this results in a predictable response during rapid semi-automatic fire. Outdoor replicas benefit from a more consistent shot pattern over longer distances, whilst DMR builds, on the other hand, benefit from minimal FPS variation between consecutive shots.

If you do open the gearbox, it is also a good idea to check the piston, cylinder head, nozzle, tappet plate and, if necessary, the main spring straight away. It is precisely the combination of these components that ultimately determines how efficiently the entire powertrain operates.

Key features

  • CNC-machined aluminium ensures a precise fit and stable compression within the cylinder.
  • Double O-ring seal minimises air loss and helps to maintain more consistent FPS readings.
  • Integrated ball bearing reduces torsion on the main spring, thereby reducing wear and ensuring smoother compression.
  • Suitable for V2 and V3 gearboxes and can be used in standard, high-torque, high-speed and DMR configurations.

Who is and isn’t it suitable for?

This piston head is a logical choice for players who are overhauling their gearbox, carrying out an airseal upgrade or wishing to fine-tune a replica. It is also a valuable upgrade for the compression section for technicians who prioritise consistent FPS.

If you’re using a simple recreational replica that’s hardly been modified and the current compression is still working perfectly, a standard piston head will often suffice. For intensively used replicas or full performance builds, however, the switch to a CNC-machined version with a double seal makes a noticeable difference.

Is a double O-ring always better than a single O-ring?
Not necessarily, but a correctly fitted double O-ring significantly increases the sealing surface area. This reduces the risk of air leakage, provided the cylinder and piston head are properly matched.

What exactly does the ball bearing do?
The bearing allows the main spring to rotate freely during compression. This reduces torsion, ensuring that the spring is loaded more evenly and retains its properties for longer.

Will this piston head increase my FPS?
The aim is not to artificially increase the FPS, but to reduce air leakage. However, if the existing air seal is poor, this often does result in more stable and sometimes slightly higher FPS readings.

Does this piston head fit in any AEG?
It is designed for most Version 2 and Version 3 gearboxes. Always check the compatibility of the other compression parts to ensure the best fit.

Is this piston head suitable for high-speed builds?
Yes, but the overall set-up remains the deciding factor. In extremely lightweight high-speed configurations, some players deliberately opt for a lighter polymer piston head, whilst this aluminium version particularly excels in compression, durability and reliability.

Do you want to significantly improve the compression of your AEG without having to open up the entire gearbox again? Then the Specna Arms Aluminium Double-Sealed CNC Piston Head Bearing is a well-designed upgrade that ensures a more efficient air seal, more consistent performance and a more reliable gearbox in the long term.
