The Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack OD Green is a compact, modular tactical rucksack with a capacity of 7.5 litres, developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system. The Smallpack can be carried as a standalone rucksack, but thanks to its detachable shoulder straps, it can also be integrated with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig. This makes it particularly suitable for airsoft, milsim, outdoor activities and professional use where a compact amount of essential kit needs to remain immediately accessible.

Helikon-Tex manufactures the rucksack from Cordura® 500D, made from 100% nylon, combining this with YKK® zips and Woojin® components. The outer fabric features a DWR treatment that reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt. Inside, a soft hook-and-loop lining and compatibility with the VIS (Versatile Insert System) ensure a modular layout, whilst MOLLE/PALS, compression straps and external attachment points provide scope to further customise the configuration.

7.5 litres in a compact design

With a total capacity of 7.5 litres, the Guardian Smallpack is deliberately not a large assault pack. The rucksack is designed to carry a compact selection of essential kit that you want to keep close at hand during a mission, skirmish, training session or outdoor activity.

The main compartment has space for items such as a hydration bladder, an extra layer of clothing, a poncho liner and other similar equipment. This means the Smallpack can be used as a compact, standalone rucksack, but also as additional storage space on the back of a tactical vest.

The upper section also features an internal zipped pocket for smaller items that you want to keep separate from the main contents.

Cordura® 500D for heavy-duty use

The main structure is made from Cordura® 500D, which is 100% nylon. This material was chosen for its good balance between weight and durability, and is suitable for equipment that is regularly carried, set down, packed full and moved alongside other gear or vegetation.

Helikon-Tex uses YKK® zips for the fastenings and Woojin® hardware for various plastic components. This means that materials from well-known manufacturers are used even for the smaller parts.

Cordura 500D is strong and hard-wearing, but of course it is not indestructible. Sharp objects, prolonged abrasion and extreme stress can eventually damage even tactical materials.

DWR treatment to repel moisture and dirt

The outer fabric features a DWR water-repellent coating. This treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt by the fabric and also makes it easier to remove light soiling.

However, DWR does not mean that the Guardian Smallpack is completely waterproof. During prolonged or heavy rain, moisture may eventually penetrate the bag, for example through seams, zips and other parts of the construction. For electronics or other moisture-sensitive items, it is advisable to use a waterproof inner bag or dry bag when bad weather is expected.

VIS-compatible for indoor use

The interior features a soft hook-and-loop lining, allowing compatible organisers and inserts to be secured in the desired position. The rucksack is compatible with the Helikon-Tex VIS – Versatile Insert System.

This makes it possible to tailor the internal layout to the specific application. Instead of storing all smaller items loosely in the main compartment, suitable VIS inserts can be used to keep tools, medical supplies or other accessories organised, for example.

The inserts are not listed as standard components of the rucksack and must be selected separately if required.

MOLLE/PALS for modular expansion

The Guardian Smallpack also features MOLLE/PALS-compatible attachment points. Suitable pouches, organisers or other modular accessories can be attached to these.

This means that the limited capacity of 7.5 litres does not necessarily mean that all equipment has to be stored in the main compartment. The rucksack can be expanded depending on the intended use, although it is wise to bear the total weight in mind. Filling a compact rucksack to the brim with heavy MOLLE pouches ultimately negates some of the benefits of the compact design.

Hydration bladder compatible

The main compartment has space for a hydration bladder. There are outlets on both sides for the drinking tube, so that the tube can be routed to the left or right depending on personal preference and the rest of your kit.

A hydration bladder is not listed as a standard item included with the product. Furthermore, the actual fit depends on the shape and dimensions of the chosen hydration system.

Detachable shoulder straps and plate carrier attachment

A key feature of the Guardian Smallpack is that it does not have to be used exclusively as a traditional rucksack. The shoulder straps are detachable, after which the Smallpack can be attached to a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The rucksack has been specifically designed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, meaning it integrates seamlessly with the Guardian Plate Carrier and other modular equipment within that system.

As a standalone rucksack, you can reattach the shoulder straps. This means you can use the same Smallpack, for example, on the back of your plate carrier during a skirmish and take it with you as a compact, separate rucksack for other activities.

Compression straps with G-hooks

On the sides there are compression straps with G-hook fastenings. These allow the contents to be secured when the rucksack is not fully packed.

This is particularly useful during dynamic movement. A jacket, hydration bladder and loose items of kit that are constantly shifting about in a half-empty rucksack are not only annoying but can also affect your balance. By compressing the space around the contents, the load stays more compact and together.

External fastening for extra clothing

On the underside there is an elastic cord which can be used, for example, to attach a jacket or other lightweight items to the outside of the bag. This means that an extra layer of clothing does not necessarily have to take up valuable space in the 7.5-litre main compartment.

This is useful, for example, when you need to put on and take off a rain layer or insulating layer regularly during a long skirmish. If you’re wearing externally attached kit, do bear in mind that branches and other obstacles may get caught on loose clothing or cords.

Part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system

The Smallpack forms part of the modular Helikon-Tex Guardian system. This system has been developed to ensure that various components of a tactical loadout fit together seamlessly, including belts, plate carriers, chest rigs and backpacks.

MOLLE/PALS and the VIS system play an important role in this regard. This allows the user to adapt the configuration to a specific task, rather than needing a completely different carrying solution for every application.

Airsoft, milsim and professional use

For airsoft and milsim, a compact 7.5-litre rucksack is particularly useful for items that need to remain readily accessible during a longer skirmish. These include water, a poncho, spare clothing, BBs, small tools or other support equipment.

When mounted on the back of a plate carrier, the loadout remains relatively integrated, and you don’t need a separate rucksack with extra shoulder straps over your tactical gear. Bear in mind, however, that items in a Smallpack mounted directly on your back are usually not easily accessible whilst you are carrying it.

The Guardian Smallpack may also be of interest for professional training, security operations and military training purposes, depending on the requirements of the user or organisation. This does not mean, however, that the rucksack automatically meets specific military or professional certification requirements.

Practical insights

The Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack OD Green really comes into its own when you’re deliberately trying to keep things compact. With a capacity of 7.5 litres, there’s plenty of room for essentials, but at the same time the rucksack forces you to think carefully about what you actually need to take with you. For a full multi-day kit, a larger rucksack is, of course, more suitable.

If you’re using it on a plate carrier, it’s best not to put items you’ll need independently during the game exclusively in the main compartment. A pouch on your back is very easy for your teammates to access; for yourself, not quite so much. Water via a hydration tube is, of course, an exception to this.

When used as a standalone rucksack, the detachable shoulder straps are actually an advantage. The compression straps can then be used to keep the contents secure, and the elastic cord at the bottom is handy for a light layer of clothing that you put on and take off regularly.

The combination of VIS on the inside and MOLLE/PALS on the outside also makes the Smallpack highly customisable. Do try to keep it compact, though: the strength of this rucksack lies precisely in its minimal capacity combined with maximum functionality.

Who is the Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack OD Green suitable for?

The Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack OD Green is ideal for airsoft and milsim players looking for a compact tactical rucksack that can be used either on its own or in combination with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

It is also ideal for outdoor, training and professional use where around 7.5 litres of essential kit is sufficient and modularity is more important than maximum storage capacity.

For users of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, the Smallpack is particularly appealing due to its integration capabilities with the rest of the platform. Thanks to VIS and MOLLE/PALS, both the internal organisation and the external configuration can be further customised.

Common mistakes

  • Don’t expect a large assault pack; the Guardian Smallpack has a deliberately compact capacity of 7.5 litres.
  • Do not regard the DWR treatment as providing complete waterproofing.
  • Don’t assume that a hydration bladder is included as standard.
  • Please note that VIS inserts are sold as separate accessories unless they are explicitly included in the scope of delivery.
  • Do not overload the external MOLLE/PALS attachments; additional pouches and their contents can quickly increase the total weight.
  • Don’t place items that you’ll need to access quickly and independently during a skirmish solely on the back of a plate carrier if you can’t reach them yourself.
  • When attaching the item to a plate carrier, check that all attachment points are correctly and securely fastened.
  • Do not allow externally attached clothing to hang loose unnecessarily whilst moving through dense vegetation.
  • Consider Cordura® 500D to be a hard-wearing material, not indestructible.
  • Don’t expect OD Green to be exactly the same shade as any Olive Green or Ranger Green product from another manufacturer.
