The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Coyote is a compact, modular tactical rucksack with a capacity of 7.5 litres, developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system. The Smallpack can be worn on its own as a rucksack, but thanks to its detachable shoulder straps, it is also suitable for integration with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The rucksack is made from Cordura® 500D, 100% nylon and features YKK® zips and Woojin® components. A DWR treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt. Inside, a soft hook-and-loop lining and compatibility with the VIS (Versatile Insert System) ensure a flexibly organisable interior. MOLLE/PALS, compression straps, space for a hydration bladder and external attachment options make the Guardian Smallpack suitable for airsoft, milsim, outdoor and tactical use.

Compact 7.5-litre storage capacity

The Guardian Smallpack has a capacity of 7.5 litres and is therefore designed to carry essential kit without the bulk of a larger assault pack. The main compartment offers space for items such as a hydration bladder, poncho liner, rain jacket, an extra layer of clothing and other compact essentials.

At the top, there is an internal zipped pocket in which smaller items can be stored separately. Measuring approximately 17 × 38 × 25 cm, its profile remains relatively compact, which is particularly useful when the Smallpack is worn directly on the back of a plate carrier.

Cordura® 500D with DWR finish

Helikon-Tex uses Cordura® 500D as its main fabric. This fabric is made from 100 per cent nylon and offers a good balance of durability and weight for equipment that is used regularly and comes into contact with the ground, vegetation and other gear.

The fabric features a DWR water-repellent coating. This treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt and makes the material easier to keep clean. However, DWR does not mean that the rucksack is completely waterproof. In the event of prolonged or heavy rain, it is advisable to use additional waterproof protection for electronic devices and other moisture-sensitive items.

Helikon-Tex uses YKK® zips, whilst various plastic components are supplied by Woojin®.

Internal VIS in MOLLE/PALS

The interior is fitted with soft hook-and-loop fasteners and is compatible with the Helikon-Tex VIS – Versatile Insert System. This allows compatible organisers and inserts to be attached in various positions.

With the right VIS inserts, the internal layout can be tailored to the application. This allows small tools, medical supplies and other accessories to be stored in an organised manner, rather than lying loose in the main compartment.

On the outside, the Guardian Smallpack features MOLLE/PALS-compatible webbing. Suitable pouches, organisers and other modular accessories can be attached to this. VIS inserts and additional MOLLE/PALS pouches are not included as standard with the Smallpack.

Suitable for a hydration bladder

The main compartment has space for a hydration bladder. There are outlets on both sides for the drinking tube, so that it can be routed to the left or right depending on personal preference and loadout.

For longer airsoft skirmishes, milsim events and outdoor activities, this is a practical way to carry water without having to keep opening your rucksack. A hydration bladder is not included as standard, and the actual fit depends on the dimensions of the chosen hydration system.

Standalone rucksack or plate carrier integration

The detachable shoulder straps allow for various carrying configurations. With the straps attached, the Guardian Smallpack can be carried as a standalone compact rucksack. Without the straps, it can be attached to a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The Smallpack has been specifically designed with the Helikon-Tex Guardian Plate Carrier in mind and forms part of the wider Guardian system. This allows the rucksack to be integrated into a modular loadout without the need for additional shoulder straps to run over the plate carrier.

If you attach it directly to the back of a plate carrier, bear in mind that the main compartment will be less easily accessible to the wearer. Equipment that you regularly need to access yourself is therefore best placed in an easily accessible pouch.

Compression straps and external fastenings

On the sides there are compression straps with G-hook fastenings. These allow the contents to be secured and the volume of the rucksack to be better adjusted to the actual load.

When the Smallpack is only partially full, the compression straps help to prevent the contents from shifting unnecessarily whilst running, bending down and during other dynamic movements.

There is also an elasticated fastening cord at the bottom. This allows you, for example, to carry a light jacket or other suitable items on the outside. This ensures that the limited internal storage space remains available for items that are better stored in the main compartment, where they are better protected.

Coyote for tactical and outdoor loadouts

This version is finished in Coyote, a versatile earth tone that can easily be combined with other Coyote, Tan and similar tactical gear.

This colour works well with loadouts for arid, mixed and natural environments, and is also popular for plate carriers, chest rigs, belts and pouches. Please note that Coyote, Coyote Brown, Tan and FDE are not entirely identical colours. Shades may vary between manufacturers, materials and production batches.

Part of the Guardian system

The Guardian Smallpack is part of the modular Helikon-Tex Guardian system. This system comprises various components of a tactical loadout, ranging from belts and chest rigs to plate carriers and rucksacks.

Thanks to MOLLE/PALS and VIS, both the exterior and the interior can be further customised. This means that the same Smallpack can be configured differently depending on the application, without the need for a completely different rucksack.

Airsoft, milsim and outdoor use

For airsoft and milsim, the Guardian Smallpack offers space for support kit such as water, a poncho, spare clothing, BBs and other essentials for longer days of play.

Its compact size is particularly appealing to players who want to carry more than will fit in a few utility pouches, but who do not need a large assault pack. Furthermore, the ability to mount it directly onto a compatible plate carrier keeps the carrying configuration relatively integrated.

The Smallpack is also suitable for outdoor activities and tactical training. With the shoulder straps attached, it can easily be used as a compact, standalone rucksack when not carrying a full tactical loadout.

Practical insights

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Coyote is particularly suitable for a compact and purpose-built kit. With a capacity of 7.5 litres, there is plenty of room for essentials, but it is not a rucksack designed for a full multi-day load.

If you’re attaching items directly to a plate carrier, think carefully about the layout beforehand. A hydration bladder works brilliantly in this position thanks to the drinking tube, but items you need to access regularly are difficult to reach when they’re at the back of your rucksack.

Use the compression straps when the Smallpack is not fully packed, and the elastic cord for a light layer of clothing that is frequently needed. With VIS on the inside and MOLLE/PALS on the outside, the rucksack can be expanded considerably, but its compact nature is actually one of its strengths. After all, more pouches do not automatically make it more tactical.

Who is the Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Coyote suitable for?

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Coyote is ideal for airsoft and milsim players looking for a compact, modular rucksack that can be used either on its own or integrated with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The combination of a 7.5-litre capacity, Cordura® 500D, VIS, MOLLE/PALS and hydration compatibility also makes it an attractive option for outdoor and training use where a limited amount of essential kit needs to be carried in an organised manner.

For users of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, the Smallpack is a logical addition thanks to its integration capabilities with the other components of the platform.

Common mistakes

  • Don’t expect a large assault pack; the Guardian Smallpack has a deliberately compact capacity of 7.5 litres.
  • Do not regard the DWR treatment as providing complete waterproofing.
  • Don’t assume that a hydration bladder is included as standard.
  • Please note that VIS inserts and additional MOLLE/PALS pouches are sold separately.
  • Do not place equipment that you regularly need to access yourself solely on the back of a plate carrier if you cannot reach it whilst wearing it.
  • When fitting directly, check that all fixing points are correctly and securely fitted.
  • Do not overload the MOLLE/PALS webbing with unnecessarily heavy accessories.
  • Make sure that clothing or other items are securely fastened beneath the elastic cord.
  • Consider Cordura® 500D to be hard-wearing and robust, but not indestructible.
  • Do not assume that ‘Coyote’ is exactly the same shade as ‘Coyote Brown’, ‘Tan’ or ‘FDE’ from other manufacturers.
