Specna Arms Aluminium CNC Gearbox V3 Frame - QD is a CNC-machined Version 3 gearbox shell designed to provide an extremely rigid base for high-performance AEG builds. Thanks to the integrated Quick Change Spring system, the precise tolerances and the use of 7075 aluminium, the entire gearbox remains better aligned, whilst spring changes are significantly quicker.

Anyone who replaces a standard moulded gearbox shell with a CNC-machined version often doesn’t notice the difference immediately in terms of a higher FPS, but rather in the way the gearbox continues to function under load. Less flex means that the gears, bearings and piston work together more consistently, reducing wear and keeping the drivetrain more stable. Particularly with replicas fitted with powerful springs, high-speed gear sets or brushless motors, this difference becomes increasingly apparent as the load increases.

Why choose a CNC gearbox shell?

The gearbox shell literally forms the foundation of every AEG. If the housing warps slightly under load, the gears and bearings become less precisely aligned. This increases the risk of uneven wear, extra noise and, ultimately, mechanical problems.

This version is fully CNC-machined from 7075 aluminium, an alloy that is considerably stronger than the aluminium often used for cast gearboxes. This ensures the structure remains stiffer when powerful M120, M130 or heavier springs are used. For techs who invest in high-quality internal components, a precise base is just as important as the components themselves.

One advantage that is often underestimated is that tighter tolerances also make shimming more predictable. As a result, adjusting the gearbox often takes less time and the adjustment remains stable for longer.

Quick-Change Spring without having to completely dismantle the gearbox

One of the biggest practical advantages is the integrated Quick Change Spring (QD) system.

With a traditional Version 3 gearbox, virtually the entire gearbox has to be opened up in order to replace the main spring. This takes time and increases the risk of shims, springs or small parts shifting out of place during dismantling.

With the QD system, you can change the main spring much more quickly when, for example, you switch from an outdoor game day to a CQB limit. For players who regularly encounter different FPS limits or visit multiple fields, this offers a noticeable improvement in ease of use.

For experienced technicians, this also means that testing different spring rates during a build is considerably more efficient.

Greater structural strength with major upgrades

As soon as a replica is fitted with a powerful motor, a high-speed gearset or a heavy main spring, the forces acting on the gearbox also increase.

A standard cast shell may exhibit minimal distortion, particularly around the bearing seats and cylinder position. This distortion is often barely visible, but may, over time, lead to less consistent alignment of the internal components.

The rigid CNC-machined construction significantly reduces this flex. As a result, the 8 mm ball bearings, gears and piston remain better aligned during every firing cycle. The result is a drivetrain that runs more smoothly and is subjected to less mechanical stress.

It is precisely during long, fully automatic firing sessions or when using replicas with a high rate of fire that this pays dividends in terms of reliability over time.

Includes 8 mm ball bearings

This gearbox shell comes with a complete set of 8 mm ball bearings.

Compared with smaller bearings, 8 mm bearings offer a larger contact surface area, making them better able to withstand higher loads. Furthermore, rolling resistance is reduced compared with bushings, which is particularly noticeable in efficient high-speed or brushless builds.

For extremely heavy-duty DMR builds, some technicians still deliberately opt for steel bushings because of their maximum durability. For most modern performance builds, however, high-quality ball bearings offer an excellent combination of efficiency and reliability.

In which builds does this gearbox shell look its best?

This Version 3 gearbox shell has been developed for players and technicians who wish to rebuild a gearbox from scratch or thoroughly upgrade an existing replica.

He fits in perfectly:

  • The AK platform
  • G36 replicas
  • The AUG platform
  • Other Version 3 AEGs (excluding Specna Arms G-series replicas)

Combined with a CNC gearset, a high-quality piston, a quiet piston head, a good cylinder block and a modern MOSFET, the result is a powertrain capable of withstanding years of intensive use.

Practical insights that are often overlooked

A common mistake is investing in expensive internal upgrades whilst retaining the original gearbox casing. The performance of premium components is ultimately limited if the base structure remains insufficiently rigid.

A second point to bear in mind is the QD system. Although quick spring changes are appealing, it is still advisable to check the FPS again after every change. Minor differences between springs can affect the final energy output.

Furthermore, many users do not realise that a more precisely machined gearbox shell often makes it easier to adjust the gear mesh and motor height. This usually results in a quieter gearbox with less mechanical resistance.

Key features

  • 7075 CNC-machined aluminium ensures an extremely rigid gearbox shell that is better able to withstand powerful springs and prolonged mechanical stress.
  • The Quick Change Spring system allows springs to be changed quickly without having to open the entire gearbox, making maintenance and FPS adjustments much more efficient.
  • Includes 8 mm ball bearings, which reduce rolling resistance and support high-performance builds with greater reliability.
  • Precise manufacturing tolerances ensure that gears, bearings and other internal components remain better aligned, resulting in a gearbox that operates more consistently.

Who is this gearbox shell suitable for?

This gearbox shell is an excellent choice for experienced airsoft technicians, players building a high-performance Version 3 AEG, or anyone looking to get the utmost reliability from a custom gearbox.

If you’re using a replica largely in its standard configuration with a light spring and have no plans for future upgrades, a good cast gearbox shell will usually do the job just fine. However, as soon as you invest in high-quality internal components or regularly change your FPS configuration, the added value of this CNC-machined version quickly becomes apparent.

Please note that this gearbox shell is not compatible with Specna Arms G-series replicas.

During a complete rebuild, you should ideally combine this gearbox shell with a suitable gearset, piston, cylinder kit, MOSFET, high-torque or brushless motor, shim set and high-quality AEG springs to get the most out of the drivetrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this gearbox shell suitable for any Version 3 replica?
It is suitable for most Version 3 AEG platforms, such as AK, G36 and AUG replicas. However, this version is not suitable for Specna Arms G-series replicas.

Can I really replace the spring without opening the gearbox?
Yes. Thanks to the integrated Quick Change Spring system, the main spring can be replaced without dismantling the entire gearbox, provided the replica’s design allows for this.

Why is 7075 aluminium better than a cast gearbox shell?
7075 aluminium is considerably stronger and stiffer. This helps the gearbox to remain better aligned under heavy loads, which reduces wear and increases reliability.

Are the included 8 mm ball bearings suitable for high-performance builds?
Yes. The bearings are designed to withstand higher loads and reduce internal resistance, making them an excellent fit for modern performance builds.

Do I need to replace any other parts when upgrading?
That is highly recommended. A CNC gearbox shell performs best when combined with high-quality gears, a well-shimmed drive train, a suitable piston and cylinder assembly, and a reliable MOSFET.

Do you want to lay a reliable foundation for a powerful Version 3 AEG that will continue to perform under heavy use for years to come? Then the Specna Arms Aluminium CNC Gearbox V3 Frame - QD is an excellent choice for a serious gearbox build.
