Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack Multicam® Black

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack MultiCam® Black is a compact, modular tactical rucksack with a capacity of 7.5 litres, developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system. The Smallpack can be carried on its own, but thanks to its detachable shoulder straps, it is also suitable for integration with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The construction consists of Cordura® 500D, made from 100% nylon, combined with YKK® zips and Woojin® components. A DWR treatment minimises the absorption of moisture and dirt. Inside, the soft hook-and-loop lining and compatibility with the VIS (Versatile Insert System) ensure a flexible interior layout. MOLLE/PALS, compression straps, space for a hydration bladder and an external elastic attachment cord make the Smallpack highly versatile for airsoft, milsim, training and outdoor activities.

Compact 7.5-litre storage capacity

With a capacity of 7.5 litres, the Guardian Smallpack is designed to carry essential kit without the bulk of a larger assault pack. The main compartment has space for items such as a hydration bladder, poncho liner, rain jacket, an extra layer of clothing and other compact essentials.

At the top, there is an internal zipped pocket for smaller items that you wish to keep separate from the main compartment. Measuring approximately 17 × 38 × 25 cm, the backpack remains relatively compact, which is particularly useful when worn directly on the back of a plate carrier.

Cordura® 500D with DWR finish

Helikon-Tex manufactures the Guardian Smallpack from Cordura® 500D, made from 100% nylon. The material offers a good balance between durability and weight and is suitable for kit that is used regularly, packed to capacity and comes into contact with other gear, vegetation and the ground.

The fabric features a DWR water-repellent coating. This treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt and makes the material easier to keep clean. However, DWR does not mean that the Smallpack is completely waterproof. For electronics and other moisture-sensitive equipment, it is advisable to use a waterproof inner bag in the event of prolonged or heavy rain.

Helikon-Tex combines the Cordura® construction with YKK® zips and Woojin® components, ensuring that high-quality components are also used for the fastenings and hardware.

Modular interior with VIS and MOLLE/PALS

The interior is lined with soft hook-and-loop and supports the Helikon-Tex VIS – Versatile Insert System. This allows compatible VIS inserts to be attached in various positions to keep small items of kit organised.

On the outside, the Smallpack features MOLLE/PALS-compatible webbing. Suitable pouches, organisers or other modular accessories can be attached to this. This allows the standard configuration to be further adapted to, for example, an airsoft, milsim, medical or training loadout.

VIS inserts and additional MOLLE/PALS pouches are not included as standard with the rucksack.

Hydration bladder compatible

The main compartment has space for a hydration bladder. There are outlets on both sides for the drinking tube, allowing it to be routed to the left or right depending on personal preference and the rest of the loadout.

This makes the Smallpack practical for longer skirmishes, milsim events and outdoor activities where it is important to drink regularly without having to open your rucksack all the time. A hydration bladder is not included as standard, and the actual fit depends on the dimensions of the chosen hydration system.

Standalone rucksack or plate carrier integration

The shoulder straps are detachable, allowing the Guardian Smallpack to be used in various ways. With the straps attached, it functions as a compact, stand-alone rucksack. Without the shoulder straps, the Smallpack can be attached to a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The model has been specifically developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system and is therefore compatible with, amongst other things, the Guardian Plate Carrier.

Mounting it directly onto a plate carrier keeps the loadout compact and prevents extra shoulder straps from getting in the way of your tactical gear. Bear in mind, however, that the contents at the back are less easily accessible to the wearer. Equipment that you regularly need to access independently during a skirmish is therefore best carried in an easily accessible position.

Compression straps and external fastenings

On the sides there are compression straps with G-hook fastenings. These allow the rucksack to be tightened around its contents when it is not fully packed. This helps prevent loose gear from shifting unnecessarily around the main compartment whilst running, bending down or during other dynamic movements.

On the underside there is an elastic attachment cord which can be used, for example, to carry a light jacket or other suitable items on the outside. This leaves the 7.5-litre internal space available for items that are better stored in the main compartment for greater protection.

MultiCam® Black for a dark tactical loadout

This version features MultiCam® Black, the dark variant within the MultiCam range. The pattern combines various shades of black and dark grey, giving the Smallpack a distinctly tactical look.

For airsoft and milsim, MultiCam® Black is particularly appealing to players who want to combine a dark or entirely black loadout with a camouflage pattern. It goes well with black plate carriers, chest rigs, belts and other MultiCam® Black kit.

MultiCam® Black should not, however, be regarded as a universal camouflage pattern suitable for every natural environment. The dark colour scheme is visually striking for specific loadouts, but in bright green or open terrain, a traditional terrain-oriented camouflage pattern may be more effective.

Part of the Guardian system

The Guardian Smallpack forms part of the modular Helikon-Tex Guardian system, in which various components of a tactical loadout are designed to work together. These include, amongst other things, belts, chest rigs, plate carriers and rucksacks.

Thanks to MOLLE/PALS and VIS, both the exterior and the interior can be adapted to a specific application. This means that the same Smallpack can be configured for different types of equipment without needing a different rucksack each time.

Airsoft, milsim and outdoor use

For airsoft and milsim, the Guardian Smallpack offers space for support gear such as water, a poncho, spare clothing, BBs and other essentials for longer days of play. Its compact size is particularly useful when a few utility pouches aren’t enough, but a large assault pack is unnecessary.

The Smallpack can also be used on its own for training sessions and outdoor activities. Thanks to its detachable shoulder straps, the rucksack is not solely dependent on a plate carrier or chest rig.

Practical insights

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack MultiCam® Black really comes into its own when you want to keep your loadout compact and organised. Its 7.5-litre capacity provides space for essential support gear, whilst preventing you from automatically packing half your kit.

When attaching items directly to the back of a plate carrier, it is important to consider accessibility beforehand. A hydration bladder is perfectly usable from this position thanks to the drinking tube, but a speedloader, tool or other frequently used item is best placed in an easily accessible position.

Use the compression straps to keep a partially packed Smallpack stable and the elastic cord for a light layer of clothing. VIS and MOLLE/PALS then offer plenty of options for expansion, but try to maintain the compact design. A 7.5-litre rucksack with fifteen extra pouches is technically modular, but not necessarily any more compact.

Who is the Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack MultiCam® Black suitable for?

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack MultiCam® Black is suitable for airsoft and milsim players looking for a compact, modular rucksack that can be used on its own or integrated with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The combination of a 7.5-litre capacity, Cordura® 500D, VIS, MOLLE/PALS and hydration compatibility also makes it an attractive option for training and outdoor activities where a limited amount of essential kit needs to be carried in an organised manner.

For users of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, the Smallpack is a logical addition, whilst the MultiCam® Black version is particularly appealing for dark and black tactical loadouts.

Common mistakes

• Don’t expect a large assault pack; the Guardian Smallpack has a deliberately compact capacity of 7.5 litres.
• Do not regard the DWR treatment as providing complete waterproofing.
• Don’t assume that a hydration bladder is included as standard.
• Please note that VIS inserts and additional MOLLE/PALS pouches are sold separately.
• Don’t put items you regularly need yourself solely on the back of a plate carrier if you can’t reach them whilst wearing it.
• When attaching the item to a plate carrier, check that all attachment points are correctly and securely fastened.
• Do not overload the MOLLE/PALS webbing with unnecessarily heavy accessories.
• Make sure that any clothing worn on the outside is securely tucked in beneath the elastic cord.
• Consider Cordura® 500D to be hard-wearing and robust, but not indestructible.
• Do not regard MultiCam® Black as the ideal camouflage for every natural environment.
