Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack Black

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Black is a compact, modular tactical rucksack with a capacity of 7.5 litres. The Smallpack has been developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system and can be carried either as a standalone rucksack or combined directly with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig. Thanks to the detachable shoulder straps, you can easily switch between the two configurations.

The rucksack is made from Cordura® 500D, 100% nylon and features YKK® zips and Woojin® components. A DWR treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt. Inside, a soft hook-and-loop lining and compatibility with the VIS (Versatile Insert System) ensure a flexible interior layout. MOLLE/PALS, compression straps, support for a hydration bladder and an external attachment point make the Smallpack highly versatile for airsoft, milsim, outdoor and tactical use.

Compact 7.5-litre storage capacity

With a capacity of 7.5 litres, the Guardian Smallpack is designed to carry essential kit without the bulk and weight of a larger assault pack. The main compartment offers space for items such as a hydration bladder, poncho liner, rain jacket, an extra layer of clothing or other compact kit.

At the top, there is an internal zipped pocket for smaller items that you want to keep separate. The stated dimensions of approximately 17 × 38 × 25 cm make it clear that the Smallpack is primarily designed for a compact loadout.

This makes it particularly suitable as an addition to a plate carrier or chest rig when you want to carry a little more kit without having to wear a large rucksack straight away.

Cordura® 500D with DWR finish

Helikon-Tex manufactures the Guardian Smallpack from Cordura® 500D. The main fabric is made from 100 per cent nylon and offers a good balance of durability and relatively low weight for tactical and outdoor use.

The outer fabric features a DWR water-repellent coating. This treatment reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt and makes the fabric easier to keep clean.

DWR should not be confused with complete waterproofing. During prolonged or heavy rain, moisture may eventually penetrate through the fabric, seams, zips or openings. For electronics and other moisture-sensitive items, it is therefore advisable to use a dry bag or other waterproof inner packaging.

As well as Cordura®, Helikon-Tex uses YKK® zips and Woojin® components for the various fastenings and attachment points.

Internal VIS in MOLLE/PALS

The inside of the Smallpack is lined with soft hook-and-loop and is compatible with the Helikon-Tex VIS – Versatile Insert System. This allows suitable organisers and inserts to be attached in various positions.

This makes it possible to adapt the internal layout to suit the application. As a result, small tools, medical supplies and other accessories do not have to be tucked away separately at the bottom of the main compartment.

On the outside, MOLLE/PALS-compatible webbing provides space for suitable pouches and other modular accessories. This allows the standard capacity to be expanded or specific equipment to be stored outside the main compartment.

VIS inserts and additional MOLLE pouches are not included as standard with the Smallpack.

Hydration bladder compatible

The main compartment has space for a hydration bladder. There are outlets on both sides for the drinking tube, so that it can be routed to the left or right depending on personal preference and equipment.

This is particularly handy during longer airsoft skirmishes, milsim events, training sessions and hikes, where it’s important to drink regularly without having to open your rucksack every time.

A hydration bladder is not included as standard. When purchasing a hydration system, please also check the dimensions, as not every bladder has exactly the same shape and capacity.

Standalone of direct op tactical gear

The shoulder straps are detachable, allowing the Guardian Smallpack to be used in various ways. With the straps attached, it functions as a compact, stand-alone rucksack. Without the shoulder straps, it can be integrated with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The Smallpack has been specifically designed with the Helikon-Tex Guardian Plate Carrier in mind and forms part of the wider Guardian system.

The advantage of attaching it directly to a plate carrier is that there are no extra shoulder straps getting in the way of the rest of the tactical gear. Bear in mind, however, that the contents at the back are less easily accessible to the wearer.

Compression straps and external fastenings

On the sides there are compression straps with G-hook fastenings. These help to stabilise the contents and allow the volume of the rucksack to be better adjusted to the amount of kit you are carrying.

Particularly when the Smallpack is only partially full, the compression straps prevent the contents from shifting unnecessarily around the main compartment whilst running, bending down or during other dynamic movements.

There is also an elastic cord at the bottom. This can be used, for example, to attach a light jacket or other suitable items to the outside of the bag. This ensures that the limited internal space remains available for items that are better stored in the main compartment, where they are better protected.

Black for a neutral tactical configuration

This version is finished entirely in Black. This makes the Guardian Smallpack easy to combine with black plate carriers, chest rigs, belts and other tactical gear.

Black is also a neutral choice for training exercises and other applications where a specific camouflage pattern is not essential. For effective camouflage in natural environments, black is naturally less specialised than a pattern designed specifically for vegetation or terrain.

Part of the Guardian system

The Guardian Smallpack forms part of the modular Helikon-Tex Guardian system. Within this concept, belts, chest rigs, plate carriers, rucksacks and modular accessories are combined to form a customisable loadout.

Support for MOLLE/PALS and VIS plays an important role in this. Additional equipment can be attached to the exterior, whilst the interior can be organised using compatible inserts.

This means that the same Smallpack can be configured differently for various uses without the need for a completely different rucksack each time.

Airsoft, milsim and outdoor use

For airsoft and milsim, the Guardian Smallpack is particularly suitable for carrying support gear such as water, a poncho, spare clothing, BBs and compact accessories that may be needed during a long day of play.

The combination of a 7.5-litre capacity and plate carrier integration makes it particularly appealing to players who want to carry more than will fit in a couple of utility pouches, but don’t need a large rucksack.

Its compact size also offers practical benefits for outdoor activities and tactical training. The Smallpack can be carried on its own and, if desired, reintegrated into a modular Guardian loadout at a later date.

Practical insights

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Black works best when used for its intended purpose: a compact carrying solution for essential items. With a capacity of 7.5 litres, there is enough space for a smart selection of kit, but not for a full multi-day pack.

When mounting the Smallpack directly onto the back of a plate carrier, it is a good idea to think in advance about which items you need to be able to access independently whilst in use. A hydration bladder isn’t a problem thanks to the drinking tube, but it is better to keep any tools you need regularly in an easily accessible pouch.

Use the compression straps when the bag is not fully packed, and use the elastic cord for a light layer of clothing. The combination of VIS and MOLLE/PALS then offers plenty of options for further customising the configuration without immediately compromising the rucksack’s compact design.

Who is the Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Black suitable for?

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack Black is ideal for airsoft and milsim players looking for a compact, modular rucksack that can be used either on its own or integrated with a plate carrier or chest rig.

It is also ideal for outdoor and training use where 7.5 litres of storage space is sufficient and a flexible layout is important. For users of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, the Smallpack is a logical addition thanks to its seamless integration with other components of the platform.

Common mistakes

• Don’t expect a large assault pack; the Guardian Smallpack has a deliberately compact capacity of 7.5 litres.
• Do not regard the DWR treatment as providing complete waterproofing.
• Don’t assume that a hydration bladder is included as standard.
• Please note that VIS inserts and additional MOLLE pouches are sold separately.
• Don’t put items you need regularly solely on the back of a plate carrier if you can’t reach them whilst wearing it.
• When fitting to a plate carrier, check that all attachment points are correctly positioned.
• Do not overload MOLLE/PALS with unnecessarily heavy accessories; this may affect comfort and balance.
• Make sure that any externally attached clothing is securely fastened beneath the elastic cord.
• Consider Cordura® 500D to be hard-wearing and robust, but not indestructible.
• Don’t assume that black provides optimal camouflage in every natural environment.
