Motors & Pinion Gears

The Airsoft Motor is the driving force behind every AEG. As soon as you pull the trigger, the motor converts electrical energy into a rotational movement which is transmitted via the pinion gear to the gears in the gearbox. This movement forms the basis of every firing cycle and largely determines how smoothly, powerfully and quickly a replica responds.

In this category, you’ll find a carefully curated range of Airsoft Motors & Pinion Gears from renowned brands such as Action Army, Aim-Top, Element, G&G, Gate, Guarder, Nimrod, Solink and Specna Arms. The range comprises Original Torque, High Torque and High Speed motors, available in both brushed and brushless versions. You can also choose between Short Type and Long Type motors, ensuring there is a suitable solution for virtually every AEG.

Whether you want to replace a worn-out motor, improve the trigger response or optimise a complete gearbox build, the right motor is one of the most important components of a high-performance AEG.

Why choose a high-quality Airsoft motor?

A good motor does much more than just turn the gears. The right motor ensures efficient power transmission, a faster trigger response and a reliable firing cycle. Which motor is best suited to your replica depends on the overall gearbox configuration.

Type Best useMain advantage
Original TorqueReplacing a standard motorReliable all-round performance for standard AEGs.
High TorqueHeavier springs and a fast trigger responseGreater torque and more efficient spring tensioning.
High SpeedFast buildsHigher rotational speed for a higher cyclic rate.
BrushlessPerformance-oriented buildsHighly efficient, powerful, quiet and durable.

You don’t achieve the best performance simply by choosing the fastest or most powerful motor, but by selecting a motor that is compatible with the other components in your gearbox.

What exactly does an Airsoft Motor do?

The motor is the power source of every AEG. As soon as you pull the trigger, the motor receives power from the battery and starts to rotate. This rotational movement is transmitted via the pinion gear to the gears in the gearbox, after which the piston is ultimately pulled backwards and the compression system can do its job.

As a result, the engine affects various characteristics of a replica, including:

  • De trigger response.
  • The speed at which the gearbox completes a firing cycle.
  • The ability to tension heavier springs.
  • The efficiency and load on the entire gearbox.

Although the motor is an important component, it never determines the performance of a replica on its own. The final results are always influenced by the combination of the motor, gear ratio, spring, battery and electronics.

Short Type of Long Type?

Airsoft motors are available in two common types: Short Type and Long Type. Which motor you need depends on the design of your replica and the gearbox used.

In most cases, the M4, HK416 and similar AEGs use a Long Type motor, whilst many AK replicas, amongst others, are fitted with a Short Type motor. However, there are exceptions, so it is advisable to always check in advance which motor type your replica uses.

Short-type and long-type motors are not interchangeable. You should therefore always check the product specifications carefully before purchasing a new motor.

High Torque of High Speed?

One of the most frequently asked questions is which engine is better: High Torque or High Speed. The answer is simple: neither is inherently better. The right choice depends entirely on the configuration of your replica.

A High Torque Motor delivers more torque and is therefore ideal for replicas with heavier springs, DMR builds or players who prioritise a fast and consistent trigger response. As the motor has more power available, it does not have to work as hard to drive the gearbox.

A High Speed Motor, on the other hand, runs at a higher speed and is often used in builds where a high Rate of Fire (ROF) is required. These motors perform best when paired with lighter springs and gear sets that are designed for a fast firing cycle.

The best choice is therefore not determined by the motor’s specifications alone, but by the way in which all the components within the gearbox work together. A well-balanced build almost always delivers better performance than a configuration in which one component is extremely powerful compared to the rest.

Brushed of Brushless?

When choosing a new airsoft motor, you’ll soon come across the terms ‘Brushed’ and ‘Brushless’. Although both motors serve the same purpose, they differ significantly in terms of technology, efficiency and performance.

A Brushed Motor uses carbon brushes to transmit current to the motor. This is a tried-and-tested, affordable technology that has been used in AEGs for many years. Brushed motors are easy to replace, widely available and an excellent choice for most standard replicas.

A brushless motor operates without carbon brushes and is controlled electronically. This results in less friction, less heat generation and greater efficiency. Furthermore, brushless motors often deliver more torque whilst consuming less power, and there are no carbon brushes to wear out over time.

Although brushless motors offer many advantages, they are not automatically the best choice for every replica. They are more expensive to buy and really come into their own in high-quality gearbox builds where the other internal components are also tailored to the higher performance levels.

What does TPA (Turns Per Armature) mean?

In addition to the speed (RPM), an increasing number of manufacturers are also specifying a motor’s TPA value. TPA stands for Turns Per Armature and indicates the number of turns of copper wire wound around the motor’s rotor.

Although this specification is less well known than the revs, the TPA value reveals a great deal about an engine’s character.

As a general rule:

  • A higher TPA delivers more torque, smoother power delivery and makes it easier to tension heavier springs.
  • A lower TPA results in a higher rotational speed (RPM), but produces less pulling power.

The right choice therefore depends not only on the engine, but on the entire gearbox configuration.

High or low TPA: which one suits your build?

A motor with a higher TPA is ideal when reliability, pulling power and a fast trigger response are more important than an extremely high rate of fire. These motors are often used in:

  • Replicas with heavier feathers.
  • DMR-builds.
  • High-torque or standard gear sets.
  • All-round replicas where reliability is paramount.

A lower TPA is actually suitable for configurations where a higher cyclic rate is required. Examples include:

  • High-speed gear sets such as 13:1 or 16:1.
  • Lighter feathers.
  • CQB-builds.
  • Replicas designed with a high rate of fire as a key feature.

A common mistake is to assume that a lower TPA automatically results in better performance. If an engine lacks sufficient torque for the chosen spring or gear ratio, the engine will actually have to work harder. This can lead to increased heat build-up, a slower trigger response and greater stress on the entire gearbox.

TPAFeaturesIdeal for
16–18 TPAHigh RPM, lower torqueHigh-speed builds and lightweight springs
20–22 TPAA good balance between speed and pulling powerAll-round AEGs
24–28+ TPAHigh torque, lower RPMHigh-torque builds, DMRs and stiffer springs

It is important to remember that a higher TPA does not automatically mean a slower replica. Because an engine with more torque can tension a spring more efficiently, the actual trigger response can, in many configurations, actually feel faster than with an engine that has a higher RPM but less pulling power.

What do 18K, 24K and 30K engines mean?

As well as the TPA rating, manufacturers often also specify a speed, such as 18K, 24K or 30K. The letter K here stands for a thousand revolutions per minute (RPM). A 24K motor therefore theoretically rotates at approximately 24,000 revolutions per minute.

Although this provides a useful indication of an engine’s speed, the revs do not tell the whole story. This is because actual performance is also influenced by factors such as:

  • The TPA value.
  • The selected gear ratio.
  • The spring’s tension.
  • The used battery.
  • The MOSFET or ETU present.

A motor with a higher RPM therefore does not automatically result in a higher rate of fire or better trigger response. As with the TPA, the motor must be compatible with the overall gearbox configuration.

Pinion Gears

The Pinion Gear is the gear mounted on the motor shaft. This small gear meshes directly with the Bevel Gear in the gearbox, thereby forming the first link in the entire drivetrain.

A worn or damaged pinion gear can lead to increased noise, accelerated wear of the gears and less smooth operation of the gearbox. Even after replacing an engine, it is advisable to check the condition of the pinion gear and, if necessary, replace it at the same time.

Leading brands in Motors & Pinion Gears

In this category, you will find a carefully curated range of motors and pinion gears from manufacturers renowned for their quality and reliability.

Gate, Solink and Nimrod are among the most popular choices for high-quality upgrade builds thanks to their powerful High Torque and Brushless motors. You’ll also find reliable motors from Action Army, Aim-Top, Element, G&G, Guarder and Specna Arms for both standard AEGs and performance-oriented upgrades.

Practical tip

Are you fitting a new motor? Always readjust the motor height afterwards. An incorrectly adjusted motor can cause more noise, lead to faster wear of the pinion gear and bevel gear, and ultimately shorten the service life of the entire gearbox.

Professional use

In a professional gearbox build, the choice of an airsoft motor is never considered in isolation from the rest of the drivetrain. Experienced airsoft technicians tune the motor to suit the gear ratio, spring, battery and electronics used. Only when these components are properly matched does a replica emerge with a fast trigger response, a smooth firing cycle and a long service life.

When replacing a motor, therefore, it is not just the speed or the TPA value that is taken into account. The condition of the pinion gear, the motor height adjustment and the load on the entire gearbox are also checked. It is precisely this holistic approach that ensures an upgrade actually delivers better performance and does not lead to unnecessary wear and tear.

What should you look out for when buying an airsoft gun?

Before you buy a new engine, it’s a good idea to first decide what you want to achieve with your replica. Are you looking for a faster trigger response, do you want to be able to use a stiffer spring, or are you actually building a high-speed set-up?

In this regard, please bear in mind, amongst other things:

  • Compatibility with your replica (Short Type or Long Type).
  • The desired balance between torque and revs (RPM).
  • The engine’s TPA value.
  • Brushed or brushless version.
  • Compatibility with the gear ratio used.
  • The spring’s tension.
  • The battery used and any MOSFETs or ETUs.

By looking beyond just the revs, you can avoid choosing an engine that isn’t compatible with the rest of your gearbox.

Motors & pinion gears inside the gearbox

Together with the pinion gear, an airsoft motor forms the starting point of an AEG’s entire drivetrain. The motor converts electrical energy into rotational motion, after which the pinion gear transfers this power to the gearset. Together, they play a key role in determining the trigger response, efficiency and reliability of the gearbox.

Are you carrying out a complete gearbox upgrade, or do you want to optimise the rest of the drivetrain? Then take a look at our AEG Gearbox Parts category, where you’ll find all the parts you need to perfectly match your gearbox components.

Common mistakes

A new engine can significantly improve the performance of an AEG, but only if it is suited to the rest of the configuration. In practice, the same mistakes are still being made.

Common mistakes include:

  • Thinking that a higher rev count automatically leads to better performance.
  • Just look at the RPM and ignore the TPA value.
  • Combining a high-speed motor with a heavy spring.
  • Choosing a high-torque motor for a build specifically designed for a high rate of fire.
  • Mixing up a Short Type and a Long Type engine.
  • Do not readjust the engine height after fitting.
  • Reusing a worn pinion gear in a new engine.

By viewing the engine as part of the complete gearbox, you’ll ultimately get more out of an upgrade than by simply choosing the most powerful or fastest engine.

Frequently Asked Questions about Motors & Pinion Gears

Does a 30K motor automatically make my replica faster?
No. The motor’s revs are just one factor. The replica’s ultimate performance is also determined by the gear ratio, the TPA value, the spring, the battery and the electronics.

Which is more important: RPM or TPA?
Neither is more important. In fact, RPM and TPA complement each other. The right combination depends on the purpose of your build. A powerful DMR requires different characteristics to a fast CQB replica.

Is a brushless motor always better than a brushed motor?
Not necessarily. Brushless motors are more efficient, often deliver more torque and generate less heat, but they are also more expensive. For many standard power tools, a high-quality brushed motor offers excellent performance.

When should I choose a high-torque motor?
A high-torque motor is particularly suitable if you’re using a heavier spring, want a fast trigger response, or want to build a reliable all-round gearbox.

Why do I need to adjust the motor height?
The motor height determines how the pinion gear meshes with the bevel gear. Incorrect adjustment can lead to increased noise, extra wear and a less efficient gearbox drive.

Advice from Airsoft-Legends

When choosing a new airsoft motor, we recommend looking beyond just the revs or the highest specifications. The best motor isn’t necessarily the one with the highest RPM or torque, but the one that works perfectly with the rest of your gearbox.

You should therefore always tune the motor to the gear ratio, spring, TPA, battery and electronics used. You should also check the condition of the pinion gear and, after fitting, always adjust the motor height correctly. It is precisely this combination that ultimately determines how smoothly, efficiently and reliably your AEG will perform.

With high-quality Motors & Pinion Gears from brands such as Action Army, Aim-Top, Element, G&G, Gate, Guarder, Nimrod, Solink and Specna Arms, you can build a gearbox that is not only powerful and fast, but above all perfectly balanced and ready for years of intensive use.
