Helikon-Tex Guardian Smallpack PL Woodland

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack PL Woodland is a compact, modular tactical rucksack with a capacity of 7.5 litres, developed as part of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system. The Smallpack is designed to be used both on its own and in combination with a compatible plate carrier or chest rig. Thanks to the detachable shoulder straps, you can easily switch between the two configurations.

The rucksack is made from Cordura® 500D, 100% nylon and features YKK® zips and Woojin® components. The outer fabric has a DWR finish that reduces the absorption of moisture and dirt. On the inside, a soft hook-and-loop lining and compatibility with the VIS (Versatile Insert System) ensure a modular layout. With MOLLE/PALS, compression straps, hydration compatibility and external attachment options, the Guardian Smallpack is particularly well-suited for airsoft, milsim, outdoor activities and professional tactical use.

Compact 7.5-litre storage capacity

With a capacity of 7.5 litres, the Guardian Smallpack has been deliberately kept compact. The rucksack is designed to carry essential kit that you want to have with you during a skirmish, training session or outdoor activity, without having to carry a large assault pack on your back.

The main compartment has space for items such as a hydration bladder, poncho liner, rain jacket, extra jacket and similar kit. There is also an internal zipped pocket at the top where smaller items can be stored separately.

With dimensions of 17 × 38 × 25 cm, the rucksack remains relatively compact, whilst the available space can be organised efficiently.

Cordura® 500D with DWR finish

Helikon-Tex uses Cordura® 500D, made from 100% nylon as its main material. This material offers a good balance of durability, flexibility and weight, making it suitable for equipment used regularly in airsoft, milsim, outdoor activities and training sessions.

The fabric has a DWR water-repellent finish. This means the material is less likely to absorb moisture and dirt, and light soiling is easier to remove. However, DWR does not make the rucksack completely waterproof. In the event of prolonged or heavy rain, it is advisable to use additional waterproof protection for electronics and other moisture-sensitive items.

Helikon-Tex uses YKK® zips for the fastenings, whilst various plastic components are supplied by Woojin®.

Modular interior with VIS

The inside of the Guardian Smallpack is lined with soft hook-and-loop, allowing compatible organisers and inserts to be attached in various positions.

The rucksack features the Helikon-Tex VIS – Versatile Insert System. With the right VIS inserts, the internal layout can be adapted to the kit you wish to carry. Think, for example, of small tools, medical supplies or other accessories that you’d prefer to keep organised rather than loose at the bottom of the main compartment.

Compatible VIS inserts are optional accessories and are not included as standard with the Smallpack.

MOLLE/PALS for additional equipment

In addition to its modular interior, the Guardian Smallpack features MOLLE/PALS-compatible webbing. This allows suitable pouches, medical modules and other MOLLE accessories to be attached to the exterior.

This allows the configuration to be expanded when the standard 7.5-litre capacity is just not quite enough. It is still advisable to bear in mind the total weight and the original purpose of the Smallpack: a compact carrying solution for essential kit.

Suitable for a hydration bladder

The main compartment has space for a hydration bladder, whilst there are openings on both sides to route the drinking tube out. This allows the tube to be routed via the left or right side, depending on personal preference and loadout.

This is particularly handy during longer airsoft and milsim events where it’s important to drink regularly, but you don’t want to have to take a bottle out of a pouch or rucksack every time. A hydration bladder is not listed as a standard feature of the rucksack.

Plate carrier, chest rig of standalone rugzak

The detachable shoulder straps give the Guardian Smallpack a range of uses. With the straps attached, it can be carried as a compact, stand-alone rucksack. Without the shoulder straps, the Smallpack can be attached to a compatible plate carrier or chest rig.

The rucksack has been specifically designed with the Guardian Plate Carrier in mind and forms part of the wider Helikon-Tex Guardian system. This system comprises various modular components for putting together a complete loadout.

When attaching it directly to the back of a plate carrier, accessibility must be taken into account. Items in the main compartment are easily accessible to a team-mate, but usually considerably less so for the wearer themselves.

Compression straps with G-hooks

On the sides there are compression straps with G-hook fastenings. These allow the contents to be secured and the volume of the rucksack to be better adjusted to the amount of kit you are carrying.

This prevents items from shifting unnecessarily inside a half-empty bag whilst running, crouching, climbing or performing other dynamic movements. In airsoft and milsim in particular, a well-compressed load helps to keep the kit closer to the body.

Elastic cord for extra clothes

There is an elastic fastening cord at the bottom. This can be used, for example, to attach a light jacket or other suitable items of kit to the outside.

This is handy for items of clothing that are put on and taken off regularly throughout the day. It means you don’t have to keep tucking a rain jacket or a light insulating layer into the main compartment every time, and the limited internal storage space remains available for other items.

PL Woodland camouflage

This version features PL Woodland, a woodland-inspired camouflage pattern that complements loadouts for wooded and green environments. This makes this variant particularly appealing to airsoft and milsim players who want their rucksack to match woodland-inspired kit.

The actual effectiveness of the camouflage naturally depends on the terrain, vegetation, season, lighting conditions and the rest of the equipment worn. No single camouflage pattern is equally effective in every environment.

Part of the Guardian system

The Guardian Smallpack forms part of the modular Helikon-Tex Guardian system. This system has been developed around various components of a tactical loadout, including belts, chest rigs, plate carriers and rucksacks.

MOLLE/PALS allows for the addition of external equipment, whilst VIS and compatible inserts provide internal organisation. This means that the same Smallpack can be configured differently for various applications without the need for a completely different rucksack.

Airsoft, milsim and professional use

For airsoft and milsim, the Guardian Smallpack is particularly useful for carrying water, a poncho, spare clothing, BBs and support kit that need to remain accessible during a longer skirmish. Its compact 7.5-litre capacity ensures the rucksack doesn’t become unnecessarily bulky when only a limited amount of extra gear is required.

The modular design may also be of interest for professional outdoor activities, training, security operations and military training purposes, depending on the requirements placed on the equipment. The fact that the product is suitable for such applications does not automatically mean that it meets specific military or professional certification requirements.

Practical insights

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack PL Woodland really comes into its own when you want to keep things compact. Its 7.5-litre capacity offers enough space for essential items, but it is not intended as a replacement for a large assault rucksack or a multi-day rucksack.

When attaching items to the back of a plate carrier, it is a good idea to consider in advance how easily you can access the contents. A hydration bladder works very well in this position, but a small item that you need every ten minutes is best kept in an easily accessible pouch.

Use the compression straps to keep the contents secure and make use of the elastic cord for lightweight kit that you need to access regularly. The combination of VIS on the inside and MOLLE/PALS on the outside offers plenty of expansion options, but try to keep the configuration functional. A compact 7.5-litre rucksack completely covered in heavy pouches ultimately misses the point a little.

Who is the Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack PL Woodland suitable for?

The Helikon-Tex® Guardian Smallpack PL Woodland is ideal for airsoft and milsim players looking for a compact, modular rucksack that can be used either on its own or integrated with tactical kit.

The combination of Cordura® 500D, VIS, MOLLE/PALS, hydration compatibility and detachable shoulder straps also makes it an attractive option for outdoor and training use where a limited amount of essential kit needs to be carried in an organised manner.

For users of the Helikon-Tex Guardian system, the Smallpack is a logical addition due to its ability to integrate directly with the rest of the modular platform.

Common mistakes

• Don’t expect a large assault pack; the Guardian Smallpack has a deliberately compact capacity of 7.5 litres.
• Do not regard the DWR treatment as providing complete waterproofing.
• Don’t assume that a hydration bladder is included as standard.
• Please note that VIS inserts are optional accessories unless they are specifically listed as included.
• Don’t put items you might need quickly solely on the back of a plate carrier if you can’t reach them whilst wearing it.
• When mounting directly onto a plate carrier, check that all attachment points are securely fastened.
• Do not overload the MOLLE/PALS webbing with unnecessarily heavy accessories.
• Secure any clothing beneath the elastic cord so that it does not easily get caught on vegetation whilst moving.
• Consider Cordura® 500D to be hard-wearing and robust, but not indestructible.
• Do not expect PL Woodland to provide the same level of camouflage in every environment.
